Motion Design: Evolution of transitions

Over the last year, I have been getting adept with transitions in mobile layouts (mostly to do with Android and iOS enterprise applications).

My research started with me referring to Sencha touch kitchen sink http://dev.sencha.com/deploy/touch/examples/production/kitchensink/index.html#demo/CoverLeft
and taking cues from the already existing standards set by the basic iOS apps such as the email and calendar. Example: Compose – the compose screen(new view) comes from bottom on top of the existing screen; These inferences were taken and evolved and applied to the enterprise apps and in some cases new patterns were used for unique enterprise scenarios especially with Sales Order and adv Search Scenarios on small screens.

These were mostly form level animations/transitions applied to the next view that occupy the screen based on the particular action. For eg: When the user taps on the single email from the list -> then the email detail slides from the left side pushing the previous screen (the list).

Things have evolved today with the Lollipop out of the wrapper and few android applications, Google Play, already show how it would change our design; And also help understand the new breed of evolved UX designer – ‘Motion Designers’ – focusing on Motion and transitions in UxD. For now, it will be the a mixed area and both Visual and UX designers will work on it

Whats the difference? The future?
– Motion on objects on screen other than form/page level transitions.
– The motion establishes context and will reduces the cognitive load
– the in and out would let the user know where he came from and where he would go when he finishes the task.

For now, i’m going through these videos to understand more about the same. Will update the post with more insights.
